SEATTLE, Jan. 28, 2005 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] today gave Boeing Commercial Airplanes' newest airplane -- the 7E7 Dreamliner -- an official model designation number of 787. The airplane now will be known as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

"We used 7E7 to highlight the airplane's dramatic efficiency advantages," said Alan Mulally, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "All those advantages and more continue with this official model designation for the airplane ."

Since the naming of the initial 707, all Boeing commercial jets have been named in succession based on the 7-7 formula: 717, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767 and 777 up to the latest Boeing commercial jet transport, the 787.

The model designation comes at the same time the company announced orders from the Peoples' Republic of China for 60 of the airplanes. The airplanes would be delivered to six Chinese carriers -- Air China , China Eastern, China Southern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Shanghai Airlines and Xiamen Airlines.

"Incorporating the 8 at the time of the China order is also significant because in many Asian cultures the number 8 represents good luck and prosperity," said Mulally.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28, 2005 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and officials from the Peoples' Republic of China today signed a preliminary agreement for the purchase of 60 Boeing 7E7 Dreamliners by Chinese airlines. The agreement, which will be finalized at a later date, is valued at approximately US$7.2 billion, based on average list prices.

The airplanes will be delivered to six Chinese carriers -- Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Shanghai Airlines and Xiamen Airlines. Each carrier is scheduled to receive its first 7E7 in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Concurrent with the announcement, the 7E7 was formally designated the Boeing 787 Dreamliner -- continuing the long and successful line of Boeing "7-series" airplanes.

"The 787 is the perfect airplane to welcome the world to China during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It will be the most technologically advanced commercial airplane in the world with more amenities to offer our passengers, and fuel efficiency that is only surpassed by its revenue potential," said Li Hai, president -- China Aviation Supply Company, at a signing ceremony in Washington, D.C., hosted by Assistant Secretary of Commerce, Al Frink. "The 787 is a good reflection of what China offers -- world-class facilities, exemplary service, and unmatched return on investment," Li said.

Customers
Boeing is pleased to be working with our airline customers to provide the very best airplane for their business. We launched the program in April 2004 with our first order and are anxious to see the first Dreamliner roll off the line.

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa - 10 airplanes, February 4, 2005
Ethiopian Airlines was founded on 30th December 1945, initially with the contractual assistance of TWA. The first planes used by the Airline were five DC-3's. The first international scheduled service was inaugurated between Addis Ababa and Cairo on April 8, 1946.

Boeing’s partnership with Ethiopian Airlines dates back some 50 years. Ethiopian Airlines has long played a leading role in the development of commercial aviation on the African continent. Among its many firsts, the carrier initiated jet service there when it added a Boeing 720B in 1963. Today, it operates an all-Boeing jet fleet of 737 and 767 airplanes. By ordering the versatile and technologically ground-breaking 787, Ethiopian Airlines sets the stage for continued growth and realization of its motto of linking Africa to the world, while benefiting from the airplane’s superior efficiency and unmatched comfort.

Vietnam Airlines, Vietnam - 4 airplanes, December 30, 2004
Vietnam Airlines’ history dates back to 1956. Starting with a fleet of only five small aircraft, the first international route was to Beijing, followed by Vientiane in 1976 and Bangkok in 1978.

Vietnam Airlines, the national airline of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, becomes the eighth announced customer for the 787, which was launched in April 2004 with an order of 50 airplanes by ANA of Japan. Vietnam Airlines will participate on the 787 launch team.

Continental Airlines, United States- 10 airplanes, December 29, 2004
Continental Airlines was founded over 60 years ago by Walter T. Varney and his partner Louis Mueller as Varney Speed Lines. On July 15, 1934, Continental's first flight was flown by its precursor Varney Speed Lines on a 530-mile route from Pueblo, Colorado to El Paso, Texas with stops in Las Vegas, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico. That same year, Varney ceded control to Mueller.

The companies signed an agreement calling for delivery of the 787-8s beginning in 2009. The 787 order is valued at approximately US$1.3 billion at list prices. Boeing and Continental expect to formally complete the agreement early in 2005.

Japan Airlines, Japan- 30 airplanes, December 22, 2004
When the precursor of today's Japan Airlines was first formed in August of 1951, it was an airline with no aircraft, no flight crews and practically no money. What it did have were some intangible assets including the Japanese heritage of pride in service and a management determined to create a world-class airline. On October 25 the first JAL aircraft took to the skies to link Tokyo with several other Japanese cities. The aircraft – three Martin 202s – and the flight crews had been leased from Northwest Airlines. A year later JAL had its own aircraft and crews; a year after that JAL opened overseas offices. In February 1954 it became an international airline with the inauguration of Tokyo - San Francisco service.

Japan Airlines Corporation (JAL) has selected the Boeing 787 Dreamliner as its next generation mid-sized twin aisle aircraft. JAL's requirement for 30 firm deliveries and 20 options will be fulfilled with a combination of 787-3s and 787-8s.

Primaris Airlines, United States - 20 airplanes, October 21, 2004
Primaris is an emerging commercial airline offering distinctive value for business travelers. Primaris plans to equip the twenty 787s will seat approximately 150 passengers in an all business class. The U.S. domestic carrier intends to build a route structure serving domestic and international business travelers starting in 2005.

"Primaris is the first low-cost carrier to select the 787 Dreamliner. Its decision validates the 787 Dreamliner as a catalyst for new business models," said Mike Bair, Boeing vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "The 787 will be the airplane of choice for many types of carriers, including network carriers, low-cost carriers, and charter and leisure carriers. It's an incredibly versatile machine."

First Choice - 6 airplanes, July 7, 2004
First Choice Airways, previously known as Air 2000, is part of the Mainstream Holidays division of First Choice Holidays PLC, incorporating some of the largest brands in the UK travel industry. First Choice, which offers both charter and scheduled service and is based near London , plans to acquire six 787-8 jetliners. The carrier will be among the first to offer passengers the 787's unique cabin features, including larger windows, wider aisles and higher humidity.

Blue Panorama - 4 airplanes, July 7, 2004
Blue Panorama, started operations in 1998. This privately-owned, all-Boeing operator currently flies five 737-400s and three 767-300ERs and will take delivery of a fourth 767-300ER in December. This year Blue Panorama expects to carry nearly 900,000 passengers on its charter and scheduled network extending across the Mediterranean , the Middle and Far East , Central America and the Caribbean . Over 70 percent of its long-haul operations are scheduled flights.

Built partly in Italy, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner will fly Italian skies in Blue Panorama's colors beginning in 2009. Blue Panorama, a charter and scheduled service operator based in Rome , plans to acquire four 787-8 jetliners for replacement and growth in its long-distance fleet. Blue Panorama will be among the first European airlines to offer passengers the 787's unprecedented comfort.

Air New Zealand - 2 airplanes, June 2, 2004 along with 8 777s
Air New Zealand Limited is an international and domestic airline group which provides air passenger and cargo transport services within New Zealand, as well as to and from Australia, the South West Pacific, Asia, North America and the United Kingdom.

Air New Zealand also became the South Pacific launch customer for the all-new Boeing 787 Dreamliner with two firm orders for the 787 and purchase rights for another six 787 models. Air New Zealand is the second 787 launch customer.

ANA (All Nippon Airways) - 50 airplanes, April 26, 2004
ANA came into existence in 1952, and more than 50 years later is now one of the 10 largest airlines in the world, carrying with its sister companies almost 51 million passengers every year to 46 destinations in Japan, and to 21 overseas cities in Asia, Europe and the United States. ANA joined Star Alliance in October 1999, giving passengers seamless access to a network of more than 700 airport destinations in 128 countries, and reciprocal benefits such as mileage accrual and redemption, and lounge access.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner sports the ANA livery after the airline placed a firm order for 50 787 passenger jets on April 26, 2004. The ANA order is the largest launch order for a Boeing twin-aisle jet in history.
