Through Sept. 30, Boeing has delivered 587 commercial aircraft in 2018, compared to 498 delivered by European rival manufacturer Airbus during the same period. In aircraft orders, however, Boeing is outpacing Airbus, as the US manufacturer has racked up a net total of 631 aircraft orders in the first nine months of 2018, compared to a net total of 255 aircraft for Airbus.
Airbus commercial aircraft orders made a significant rebound in October as the Toulouse-based manufacturer reported firm bookings for 85 aircraft, valued at around $13.4 billion.
It was Airbus’ best month for orders since June and included the company’s largest order from a single commercial airline customer of 2018 to-date.
On Oct. 26, Vietnamese carrier VietJet Air firmed an order for 50 A321neos, valued at approximately $6.5 billion, originally placed as an MOU at the Farnborough Air Show in July. The new order increased the number of A320 family aircraft ordered by VietJet to 171, of which 46 have already been delivered, Airbus said.
The October tally brings Airbus’ gross commercial aircraft order total for 2018 to 394 aircraft. Subtracting reported cancellations, Airbus has a net total of 338 new commercial aircraft on order for the year through Oct. 31.
Airbus’ other major orders booked in October included 17 A320neos from Lufthansa, eight A330-800s from Kuwait Airways and an order for 10 A330-900s from an undisclosed customer.
US manufacturer Boeing, meanwhile, recorded new bookings for 17 aircraft in October, valued at about $3.4 billion. Boeing’s largest order for the month came from Indian carrier Vistara for six 787-9s, valued at $1.7 billion.
Through Oct. 31, however, Boeing’s order tally nearly doubles that of Airbus, with a gross total of 785 new aircraft orders. Subtracting cancellations, Boeing’s net total of new aircraft ordered for the year through Oct. 31 comes to 606.
In October deliveries, Airbus also took the lead with 80 commercial aircraft placed with 39 customers, compared to Boeing’s 56 deliveries. Airbus delivered 67 A320 family aircraft, of which 48 were A320/A321neos; nine A350s; two A330s and two A220s (including the first A220 provided to a US carrier, Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines; Latvia’s airBaltic took the other A220).
Boeing delivered 56 aircraft to 37 customers during the month, including 22 737 MAXs, 17 737-800s, 12 787 family aircraft, three 737-900ERs and two freighters. China Eastern Airlines took delivery of four aircraft (three 737-800s and one 787-9), Boeing’s highest delivery customer for the month.
Through Oct. 31, Boeing has delivered 643 commercial aircraft in 2018, compared to Airbus’ 578.
November’s deliveries were made to 54 customers, comprising two A220s, 71 A320 Family jetliners, three A330s, 11 A350 XWBs and two A380s.
