Northwest gets court backing to return 106 planes
Thu Oct 27, 2005 11:35 AM ET
NEW YORK, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Northwest Airlines Corp. (NWACQ.PK: Quote, Profile, Research) on Thursday won bankruptcy court permission to cancel leases on 106 airplanes, setting the stage for the airline to further scale back flights as it reorganizes.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Allan Gropper had previously cleared the way for Northwest to return another 108 planes if it could not negotiate lower lease and debt payments on the aircraft.

Northwest said earlier this month it planned to reduce its mainline flight schedule as much as 15 percent or more, one of several carriers that are scaling back capacity in a bid to win improved pricing power to offset soaring fuel prices.

The capacity cutbacks are part of a wider bid by the No. 4 U.S. airline to save $2.5 billion. The plan also includes heavy labor cost cuts.

The airplanes to be returned include 49 Saab regional turboprop planes subleased to feeder service operator Mesaba Aviation Inc., a subsidiary of Mair Holdings Inc. (MAIR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , which has also filed for bankruptcy.

But Northwest also won permission to return several larger jets, including 27 Airbus A320 and A319 planes and 12 Boeing 747 jumbos, as well as 15 Bombardier regional jets subleased to Pinnacle Airlines (PNCL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , another feeder carrier.
