Finnish SAS pilots warn of strike

Monday, January 31, 2005 Posted: 1947 GMT (0347 HKT)

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Scandinavian airline SAS said the pilots of its Finnish unit Blue1 had warned that they would go on strike.

This occurred after efforts to reach a new wage deal ended without agreement between the airline and its staff.

Blue1 said on Monday the trade union representing the pilots threatened to go on strike initially on February 15, starting at 0500 Finnish time for seven hours, with another strike to follow on February. 17 at 1400 GMT lasting until midnight GMT.

The pilots' association had demanded a three-year wage deal with a salary increase of 20.7 percent in the first year, while the airline offered a 2.5 percent wage hike in the first year, in line with a nationwide pay deal, Blue1 said.

Blue1 employs around 125 pilots, including co-pilots and captains.

Their average monthly salary is over 4,300 euros ($5,606), said Peter Forsstrom, head of employers' lobby Palvelualojen toimialaliitto, which represents Blue1 in the matter.
