Stansted confirm plans to submit planning application to grow beyond 25 million
28 April 2004

Just over a year ago, Stansted Airport was granted planning permission to serve up to 25 million passengers per annum, an uplift from its previous throughput of about 15 million.

Today, April 28 sees the announcement of the next phase of the airports development. Chris Butler, Business Development and Planning Director BAA Stansted, will outline the next steps as part of a speech to be made at the Stansted Airport Consultative Committee (STACC) this afternoon.

Current trends confirm Stansted as Europe's fastest growing major airport and puts the airport at the heart of low-fare flying. There is now every prospect that 25 million passengers per annum will be reached sometime during 2006, rather than the original predicted date of 2010.

Chris Butler said "It is clear that we should move forward now, and I want to confirm to you today that it is our aim to submit a planning application within the next 12 months for permission to go beyond the current capacity limit of 25 million passengers per annum.

"Subject to the outcomes of the appropriate effect studies, we will be seeking to increase capacity to around 35 million.

"This increase in passengers will involve more flights, but our initial thinking indicates there is unlikely to be a need for any further major building work beyond current consents. In addition, facilities can be accommodated within the airport's current boundary. This can be accomplished with the present single runway.

"The announcement is not about a second runway, that will be the subject of an entirely separate application later in 2005.

"We wish to meet what will be a tight but achievable timescale, because we want to give Uttlesford Council sufficient time to consider the detailed planning application."

Following the announcement today preparations for submitting the planning application will get underway. This will involve doing many things that are required of us as part of a formal process, including detailed effects studies on a wide range of topics from noise and air quality, water and waste, to transport, jobs and housing.

In addition, we will be investing a great deal of time talking and listening to elected representatives and local people to make sure everyone has the opportunity to ask questions and express their views.

Notes to Editors:
Stansted has quickly become a significant asset for many of the international companies based in the East of England. In a poll by the East of England Development Agency business leaders named Stansted as the region's best asset. A region that is among the most successful and fastest growing in Europe, containing many of the world's leading entrepreneurs and businesses. For them, and for the millions of other business and leisure travellers, we are the gateway to the newly enlarged European community.

The airport has grown to be a major employer and buyer of goods and services. Local companies won orders worth over £1m at our Meet the Buyers event last year.

In salaries alone we put over £350m of spending power into the local economy, so given these wider knock-on effects, Stansted clearly makes a major contribution to the strength of the local economy.
