Air New Zealand becomes second 7E7 customer

Air New Zealand has opted for a Boeing solution to its long-haul fleet requirements with orders and rights for up to 52 777s and 7E7s.

The firm orders are for eight 777-200ERs and two 7E7s, all powered by Rolls-Royce engines.
ANZ MD and Chief Executive Ralph Norris told ATWOnline yesterday that the order will provide the airline with new capabilities for its long-haul operations. "These aircraft will allow us to develop new routes and increase frequency on existing routes as well as provide an overall increase in both passenger and cargo capacity," he said. "Another benefit is that the new fleet will provide Air New Zealand with lower operating costs and improved financial performance over and above that which could be achieved by expanding the existing fleet of 10 767s."

Four of the 777-200ERs will be purchased and the other four leased from ILFC. They will be delivered from September 2005 and will be fitted out with the airline's soon-to-be-announced interior upgrade for its 747s. The first five will be delivered by April 2006 and the final three in the last half of 2006.

Norris told ATWOnline that the decision to purchase the two aircraft types represents the next phase in ANZ's commitment to transform its business. The first phase was the introduction of Domestic Express, Tasman Express and Pacific Express along with its new A320 fleet.

The delivery date for the two 7E7-8s is still to be determined, but it will coincide with the retirement from service of the final 767s. "The decision to commit to the 7E7 and the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 is a clear signal of where Air New Zealand is positioning itself--innovative, efficient and delivering the best products to customers," Norris said.

He added that the decision to secure rights to purchase a further 42 aircraft "reflects the airline's belief in the potential to expand its passenger and cargo business into new long-haul destinations and increase traffic from existing core routes. The purchase rights will give us the ability to choose from a range of aircraft types that best suit our long-haul business as it develops in the future. The aircraft options include the 777-200ER, 777-200LR, 7E7 and 777-300ER, which could replace our Boeing 747s in about a decade."--Geoffrey Thomas

Θα το χαρακτήριζα turning point για το 7Ε7. Για δεύτερη φορά σε σύγκρουση Β vs. A για 200-250. Η πρώτη ήταν η SQ, με τη μαζική παραγγελία των 34+43 777. Τώρα η ΝΖ.
Και στις δύο περιπτώσεις το 777 παραγγέλεται, αν και μεγαλύτερο σε χωρητικότητα του αρχικού RFP. Τότε παραγγέλθηκε για να γίνει ...misuse. Τώρα παραγγέλεται για να καλύψει το κενό μέχρι την έλευση του 7Ε7.

Πράγματι, η ΝΖ δεν μπορούσε να περιμένει άλλο με τα 767 της, γινόταν αντι-ανταγωνιστικά. Αν ήθελε κάτι τώρα, ή το 332 θα έπαιρνε ή το 777 για να το αντικαταστήσει με το 7Ε7 αργότερα. Απο τα 8 777, τα 4 θα είναι αγορά και θα κρατηθούν, τα 4 θα νοικιαστούν μέχρι να έρθουν τα 7Ε7. Και δεν μιλάω για τα 2 7Ε7-3, που θα κάνουν τα trans-Tasman, αλλά νέα παραγγελία για αρκετά 7Ε7-8/9.
