Swiss Air to join oneworld alliance

Monday, April 26, 2004 Posted: 0329 GMT (1129 HKT)

ZURICH, Switzerland (Reuters) -- Swiss International Air Lines still aims to join the oneworld alliance of airlines, despite problems over integrating its rewards system, said a spokeswoman for the flag carrier.

"Membership at oneworld is still our strategic goal; there are no new contacts with Lufthansa," the spokeswoman told Reuters following media reports that the failure to join oneworld on time had prompted the loss-making carrier to turn to its German rival.

Swiss was due to join the strategic oneworld alliance led by British Airways at the end of March but stumbled over problems integrating its air miles incentive program with that of founding member BA.

Formed from the remnants of failed predecessor Swissair and regional airliner Crossair, Swiss was torn last year between casting its lot with BA or seeking support from Germany's Lufthansa and its Star Alliance.

Airlines are protective of the client data they collect with their frequent-flyer reward systems. Sharing such sensitive information and balancing different reward levels still pose unresolved problems.

The airline, which has not yet made a profit two years after it started to fly, on Monday named former Lufthansa man Christoph Franz as its new chief executive, sparking talk that he might turn the airline towards the Star Alliance.

"Both Swiss and BA are making an effort to find a solution as quickly as possible that will be profitable for both sides," Swiss said in a statement. "Swiss sticks to its entry into oneworld."

Swiss airline posts lower first-quarter losses
Thursday May 6, 4:37 am ET

BASEL, Switzerland (AP) -- Switzerland's struggling national airline said Thursday it lost 78 million Swiss francs (US$61 million) in the first three months of 2004, compared to a net loss of 200 million francs (US$157 million) in the same period last year.
First quarter sales were 19 percent lower at 846 million francs (US$664 million), from 1.04 billion francs (US$816 million) a year ago, said Swiss International Air Lines -- also known as Swiss.

"Swiss's consistent pursuit of its corporate restructuring activities is having an increasingly positive impact on its future business performance," the company said. "The full benefit of these endeavors will be felt in the course of 2004 and 2005. The first-quarter results ... also reflect a general recovery throughout the air transport market."

By midmorning, Swiss shares were down 1.3 percent at 11.20 francs (US$8.79).

Swiss is midway through a restructuring program which includes eliminating the carrier's biggest loss-making routes. The company hopes to reduce annual costs by 1.6 billion francs (US$1.3 billion) and has slashed the number of full-time staff by more than 3,000 since the end of 2002, to the current 7,554.

The company entered a pact in September with British Airways and joined BA's global OneWorld airline alliance.

Swiss was created out of the defunct Swissair in March 2002.
